Euthanasia is a part of every day practice in campanion animal practice. However many practitioners receive very little training or none at all on how to deal with these difficult consults. 

This is one of the most difficult days of a pet owners lives, so knowing how to comfort and care for both the pet and the owner is key. The emotional stress can also get to practitioner as they get to know these pets over the years,

  • Understanding anf supporting pet owners through grief and difficult decisions - creating emotional safety, helpfulk vs unhelpful language. 
  • Preparing owners for the procedure itself.
  • Techincal skills - sedation protocoles, IV Catheters, intra-organ techniques. 
  • Respectful body care, the importance of memorialisation and keepsakes.
  • Signposting supports resources
  • Supporting ourselves and eachother.
